At Churchfields, we aspire for our children to develop a love of music through a high quality music curriculum. Children have opportunities to develop their interest and talent as musicians and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. We promote and teach the appreciation of music in all its diversity, culture and history and also learn how to use appropriate music technology.

What is the structure of teaching and learning?

Music is taught weekly for all children. Children develop musical knowledge and skill in half termly or termly units of work which focus on a core element of the curriculum.

Using the award winning Charanga Music Scheme, all children have access to an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning. The Charanga Musical School Scheme provides teachers with week-by-week lessons for each year group in the school from ages 5-11.

Our learning is built around the Interrelated Dimensions of Music: pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure and notation. These dimensions are at the centre of all our lessons. The interrelated dimensions of music weave through the units to encourage the development of musical skills as the learning progresses through listening and appraising, differing musical activities (including creating and exploring) and performing.

Each Unit of Work comprises the of strands of musical learning which correspond with the National Curriculum for music:

What is special about music at Churchfields?

Year 3 have weekly recorder lessons. Bromley Youth Music Trust offer individual instrument lessons, including piano, violin and guitar which are available to all pupils. We have two fantastic music evenings every year where children perform a piece on their instruments to the school and families. We also have three great choirs: a junior choir, a senior choir and a Community Choir. We are really proud that our children have performed at Bromley Proms and at Young Voices at the O2.
